(Ibn al-Banna) then narrated his sixth ruling (concerning the manners of the path) regarding the permissibility of samā` and so I say: Samā` is defined as listening to poetry either with melody or with music. Here, the author discussed its ruling, rules, manners, and benefits. He began with its ruling stating:

Shaykh Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn `Ajībah al-Hasanī
To people, samā` is an area of dispute (khawd)
But for this group it is a garden (rawd)
The `Irāqīs said it is unlawful
While the people of Hijāz said that it was permissible
