Allahumma’j`lni mina’t tawwabin wa’j`alni mina’l mutatahhirin (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, One without partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. O Allah, make me of the truly repentant and make me of those who truly purify themselves),’ all eight of the doors of Paradise are opened for them--and they can enter from whichever they wish.” [Muslim (144), Tirmidhi (55), and Abu Dawud (169), though Muslim didn’t mention the second part of the supplication]

8. Islamic Parenting: Prophetic Guidance on Raising Children

This course is based on two texts, Simt al-`Uqyan, (Thread of Pure Gold) and its commentary. Simt al-`Uqyan is a classical text on parenting written 500 years ago by Imam Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Ramli who was one of the leading authorities of the Shafi`i school in the tenth century after Hijra. Its commentary was authored by the Yemeni scholar Shaykh Abdullah ibn Ahmad Basudan in the thirteenth century after Hijra.

9. Imam Ghazali’s Faith in Divine Unity and Trust in Divine Providence

This course is based on Book XXXV of The Revival of the Religious Sciences (Ihya `Ulum al-Din) by Imam al-Ghazali. Understanding Virtue through the Prophetic Teachings (Lesson Twelve): In this lesson Shaykh Faraz discusses how prayer is a form of seeking assistance from Allah (the most exalted), how it expiates our sins, and the importance of sincerity in making our prayers transformative. Abu Hurayra (Allah be pleased with him) relates that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “If there were a river at the door of one of you from which they can bathe five time a day, do you think any of their dirt would remain on them?” They replied, “No, none of their dirt would remain.” He said (peace and blessings be upon him), “That is the example of the five prayers: by them, Allah wipes out sin.” [Bukhari (528) and Muslim (667)]

Abu Hurayra (Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever performs ritual ablution and does so well, and then goes to the Friday prayer, listens, and is attentive shall have all their sins between that Friday and the previous Friday as well as three extra days. Understanding Virtue through the Prophetic Teachings(Lesson Fourteen): In this lesson, Shaykh Faraz discusses the the importance of praying the Sunnah of Fajr. `A’isha (Allah be pleased with her) relates that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “The two rakats of (the Sunnah of) Fajr are better than the world and all it contains.” [Muslim (725) and others]

“Call to the Way of your Lord with wisdom and good admonition, and argue with them in the ways that are best.”
(Surah al-Nahl v. 125)


In this lecture, Shaykh Faraz reminds us that the purpose of dawah and discourse is to call people to Allah (the most exalted) alone. This entails following the Prophetic character by exhibiting wisdom, mercy, and sincere concern. Lastly, he mentions the importance of avoiding arguments and dealing with disagreements when they arise.

The Virtues of Duha’ Prayer

Understanding Virtue through the Prophetic Teachings (Lessons Fifteen to Seventeen): In this lesson, Shaykh Faraz discusses the Duha’ (mid-morning prayer), its virtues, and how to perform it.

Abu Hurayra (Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Whoever consistently performs two rakats of Duha, their sins are forgiven, even if like the foam of the sea.” [Ibn Maja (1382) and Tirmidhi (476)]

Nu`aym ibn Hammar (Allah be pleased with him) relates that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, “Allah Most High says: O child of Adam, don’t fail to perform four rakats in the beginning of your day, and I shall be your sufficiency at its end.” [Abu Dawud (1289) and Tirmidhi (475)]

The Virtues of Four Rakats Before `Asr

The Virtues of Prostrating to Allah Alone

Understanding Virtue through the Prophetic Teachings (Lesson Nineteen): In this lesson, Shaykh Faraz discusses the virtues of prostrating to the one alone worthy of worship. Rabi`a ibn Ka`b al-Aslami (Allah be pleased with him) said that he would sleep by the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) and then give him water for his ritual ablutions (wudu’) and needs. He said to me, “Ask.” I said, “I ask you for your close company in Paradise.” He said, “Anything else?” I said, “This is what I want.” He replied, “So assist me against yourself with much prostration.” [Muslim (489), Abu Dawud (1320), Nasa’i (1139)]

In this lecture, Shaykh Faraz discusses the tremendous virtue of knowledge in Islam and explains how our knowledge of the deen should not consist of mere factoids and to-do-lists but should be a transformative experience that draws us closer to Allah (the Most Exalted) by seeking His pleasure.
